Along came a spider…to index or just browse?

May 14, 2014

Next time I’ll carry a copy of the “robots txt file” just to be safe.

These days it’s not uncommon for bodybuilders to put whey powder in their protein shakes and yesterday I myself had a big helping of poutine, which consists of french fries mixed with brown gravy and cheese curds, a kind of Canadian “down haute” cuisine.

Point is, unlike the old days of “Little Miss Muffet” we no longer have it so tuffet. We don’t have to eat our curds and whey together, which is progress of a sort.

Though we still have spiders that sit down beside us; particularly when we’re blogging in a park on our laptops on a sunny day.

So that at least hasn’t changed since the 1800s when the poem was first published, unless…

Unless that was a Google spider.

Up till now their spiders have all been indexing programs that only crawl the World Wide Web but the Mountain View, California, company has been buying up a lot of robotics and drone companies. You have to wonder why.

Maybe they’ve decided to “get real” in their endless quest for our social metadata. That would also be progress of a sort. Click the image to enlarge it.

    Are you a redditor?

    If you aren’t –

    • “Redditor” as in Reddit? No. Tried to submit a post to Reddit early in my blogging. Didn’t do it properly or something. Your link opens the post in a view in the WordPress Reader. You’re confusing me again. You know how simple minded I can be… I can’t even be trusted to use the DD command unless I’m using it through the GUI front end.

I so remember the first time I dd’d using the Terminal. The dread premonition that I felt as my index finger gently pressed the Enter key. The satisfying way the screen of my laptop instantly turned jet black.
