New camera keeps an eye on West Broadway

December 9, 2014

Someone appears to be conducting a traffic study at the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and South Granville and they’re using a neat video rig designed to do unattended video recording for up to 72 hours.

A telescoping pole extended to a height of maybe nine feet and topped with a small video camera has been secured to a metal light pole on the north west side of the 1400 block of West Broadway Avenue. The camera is pointed west and down towards the traffic in the intersection with South Granville Street.

The rig itself is called a Scout Video Collection Unit and  is made and sold by a company called Miovision Technologies with offices in Ontario, Canada, and Köln, Germany.

The unit is purpose-built for collecting traffic data and can record up to 72 hours of MP4 video at a bitrate of 380 kbps. The data can then be viewed on the unit or uploaded to a web-based platform for management and sharing. Click the images to enlarge them.
