What does 231 x 4 equal?

February 9, 2015

Normally 231 times 4 equals 924, except that in this post we’re dealing with hand-lettered numbers and the human factor always contributes extra value.

There is no simple way to assess this extra value as it is always in the eye of the beholder but such numbers will always add up to more than the sum of their parts.

The bigger the number, the longer it lasts

These four instances of the same number are from the four corners of a white school bus. It interests me to see both the degree of consistency in the sign painter’s hand and the lack of consistency in the way the four sets of numbers have weathered the years. Click the images to enlarge them.
